Turkey Pet Import Rules and Requirements: A Guide by Estates Istanbul

Relocating to a new country can be a complicated process, and it becomes even more challenging when you plan to bring a pet along. At Estates Istanbul, we understand how much your furry friend means to you, and that’s why we’ve prepared this comprehensive guide to importing pets to Turkey. Keep reading to familiarize yourself with the necessary steps for a safe and efficient pet relocation process.

Microchip and Rabies Titer Test: Your Pet’s First Step

Before you even book a flight for your pet, make sure your veterinarian is accredited by the relevant government authority in your country of origin. For U.S residents, this would mean finding a USDA-accredited vet. The first steps involve microchipping your pet for identification and administering a rabies vaccination. Following the vaccination, a Rabies Antibody Titer Test is mandatory to confirm sufficient rabies antibody levels. A result of at least 0.5 IU/ml from a government-approved lab is a must-have.

Vaccination Requirements: Better Safe Than Sorry

Dogs are required to have the following vaccinations:

  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis
  • Leptospirosis
  • Parainfluenza
  • Parvovirus (DHLPP)
  • Bordetella
  • Rabies

Cats must be vaccinated against:

  • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis
  • Calicivirus
  • Panleukopenia (FVRCP)
  • Rabies

Ensure these vaccinations are administered at least four weeks but no less than two weeks before your planned departure date.

Import Permit and Health Certificate: The Official Documents

We will make you contact with the experts you in obtaining an import permit, a mandatory requirement for bringing pets to Turkey. Additionally, an international health certificate (often referred to as APHIS 7001) should be completed by your accredited veterinarian within 10 days of your departure.

Preparing Your Pet for Travel: The Comfort Factor

Invest time in crate training your pet. The familiarity of the crate will serve as a comfort zone for your pet during the air travel, making the journey less stressful for them.

Clearing Customs: The Final Frontier

Once you land in Turkey, you’ll need to clear customs to enter the country with your pet. Prepare to provide the following documents:

  • A copy of the pet owner’s passport
  • Original Rabies Vaccine Certificate
  • Original APHIS form 7001 with USDA endorsement
  • Original Import Permit
